MUSCAT: Cyclone Ockhi, which hit Lakshadweep archipelago off the south-west coast of India on Saturday, has no effect on Sultanate.
Cyclone Ockhi was named by Bangladesh and it means eye in the Bengali language. The latest satellite images and weather charts analysis at the National Multi Hazard Early Warning Centre indicate that Ockhi is centred in south-east of the Arabian Sea and continues heading to the middle of the Arabian Sea during the next 24 hours. Temperatures are predicted to drop considerably in Oman from Saturday night to Tuesday because of the northeasterly winds blowing through the Sultanate, according to the Public Authority for Civil Aviation (PACA).
Thousands took to relief camps in Sri Lanka and southern India on Saturday to escape rising floodwaters after a cyclone killed at least 26 people.
Cyclone Ockhi has left 13 people dead in Sri Lanka and killed an equal number in India’s Kerala and Tamil Nadu states since Friday as it churns in the Arabian Sea. Eleven people, mostly fishermen, remained missing in the two countries as nearly 9,000 people sought shelter in relief camps.
